11/11/11

The challenge this week was to write an 11/11/11 poem; I hope a number of you will post your poems and comments here.  As you know, the armistice signed this day, ending the Great War, was greeted by joy as the War to End All Wars:

11/11/11

Eleven/eleven/eleven
Papa’s dead and gone to heaven
Tom and Dick took strange leaven
Eleven/eleven/eleven

Eleven/eleven/eleven
Tarot card, ouija board, master plot
Mayan sage, and all seers misbegot
Eleven/eleven/eleven

Eleven/eleven/eleven
Shrapnel and shell: we won
Lookie, lookie, what we done
Eleven/eleven/eleven

  1. How is it that the most talked about part of Friday was that it was 11/11/11? It was Remembrance Day. Shouldn't remembering those who lost their lives fighting for their country take precedence over a bunch of numbers?

  2. I agree with William. Remembering those who fought should take priority over a wish. You would think with all the media in our lives this message would be portrayed yet people had been looking forward to this day since they first thought about it. Although people lost their lives fighting, people soley focused on themselves and a theoretical wish.

  3. its november 11 two thousand and eleven
we should remember those who died and went to heaven
this day should be about heroes
but i forgot what day this truly was about.
    Why did I forget?
because of a damn wish i better well get
it comes once in a hundred years
and when it happened you could hear the cheers
    but not for the heroes
the talk that day was what wish you chose
and not about the american songs one knows
that day is here and gone
and now I know that its about the heroes

    1. i also agree with evelyns poem and also the word leaven is the ingredient in bread that makes it rise maybe that is like a metaphor for the soldiers who rose to the challenge and honor and were brave during remembrance day.

    Eleven eleven eleven
    Eleven is greater than seven
Seven eleven for a weary traveler is heaven
    Eleven eleven eleven
    My middle name is Devin
    Four plus seven makes eleven
    De plus evin makes Devin
    Eleven. Eleven. Eleven.

  8. I have to say that I agree with William as well. We really should have been honoring those who lost their lives instead of focusing about it being a palindrome. The fact of the matter is that when it comes to dates in our society, we usually only get excited about the dates that are based on a multiple of five for some reason, such as the 50th anniversary of a marriage, or the 75th anniversary of a business' establishment, etc. But this is the 94th anniversary of armistice. In 6 years I am betting the media will make a much bigger deal about it.

  9. I agree with William as well, that day should be about honoring the people rather than the poem. Remembrance day should be about the peoples lives and they should have at least mentioned some stuff about their lives and focused on rhyming won with done. This is a real downer on the peoples lives and they should be represented in a better way than rhyming and at least talk about the peoples lives.

  11. I thought Osei's poem was very creative, and I also thought Evelyn had a great poem. Remembering the people who fought to protect our freedoms should be the priority

  12. Instead of rhyming about the few words that happen to rhyme with eleven, I think that a lot more could be done publicly as well as internally to improve the awareness of the Armistice of the war. Who says fighting and eleven don't relate?

  13. I think that by using this repetition of language of "eleven" the reader is forced to read further into the reason behind why the author would use the repetition. "Tarot" when looked up on the internet The tarot ( /ˈtæroʊ/; first known as trionfi and later as tarocchi, tarock, and others) is a pack of cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot. I believe that in a poem of such few words the development and complete understanding of each and every word in the poem.
